Endangered Wildlife

There are a number of endangered wildlife species that find a safe haven in the wetlands created at Softfoot Alpaca Stud.

Download to view the full video of the Australian Swamp Rat, or view it on Youtube preview below

Rattus Lutreolus is the common name of the Australian swamp rat. This delightful little creature has made it's home all around our extensive wetlands.

Endangered Marsupials Sanctuary

Softfoot Alpacas has constructed a 10 hectare fully fenced reserve to house only endangered Australian marsupials  we will be supplying a live video feed to this page so anyone can see animals living in their native habitat real time.

Purple Spotted Gudgeon

The Purple Spotted Gudgeon was declared extinct in South Australia in 2003. Fortunately for the Gudgeon I seeded our 3 hectare wetlands with 23 fish in 2001which I sourced from a specialty native fish breeder .

There now is a population of many hundred at Softfoot Alpaca Stud which will be used to reseed other wetlands in the near future.
